WEEKLY AGENDA + ASSIGNMENTS, APRIL 27 - MAY 1, 2020
**This weeks LIVE sessions:
Wednesday @11:30 AM: Office Hours for Questions (https://tinyurl.com/BioOfcHrs)
Please note--the LIVE sessions are not required.
Evolution Project Instructions: You will have 3 weeks to work on this project. This week, you will focus on Part 3 and you have an opportunity for extra credit. Check your teacher's blog or Google Classroom for a checklist to use as you progress through the project.
Standards:
SB6.e: Model the role of natural selection in biological resistance. (e.g., pesticides, antibiotic resistance, and influenza vaccines)
Part 3 SB6e: Learning Target: I will understand how pesticides, antibiotics, and vaccines evolve and change.
Choose one:
We are currently experiencing the outbreak of a newly discovered virus, SARS-CoV-2. Research the SARS-CoV (SARS) outbreak in 2002-2004 and compare and contrast it to the current outbreak. Also, compare and contrast the two viruses and their diseases. Cite your sources

- Write a journal from the perspective of a virus, bacteria, and/or insect explaining how they developed resistance to vaccines, antibiotics, and/or pesticides respectively.
- Draw a comic strip of how a virus, bacteria, and/or insect explaining how they developed resistance to vaccines, antibiotics, and/or pesticides respectively
- Create a video or slide show showing you using materials around the house to model how a virus, bacteria, and/or insect developed resistance to vaccines, antibiotics, and/or pesticides respectively. Explain your model to us.

Standards:
SB6.c: Argue the claim that all living organisms are related by way of common descent using evidence from comparative morphology (analogous vs. homologous structures), embryology, biochemistry (protein sequence), and genetics.

- You are a lawyer who must defend an organism’s claim that it is related to a different species. Make a case and give the evidence based on the evidence types from standard SB6c. This can be done in a video format, case file, or a story.

Standards:
SB6.a: Explain how understandings of Earth’s history, emergence of new species, and genetics have influenced our understanding of biology.
SB6.c: Argue the claim that all living organisms are related by way of common descent using evidence from comparative morphology (analogous vs. homologous structures), embryology, biochemistry (protein sequence), and genetics.
Part 1 SB6a: Learning Target 1: I will be able to describe the major accomplishments of each scientist and how their accomplishments contributed to Darwin's theory of evolution and natural selection.
Learning Target 2: I will be able to analyze or interpret patterns of biodiversity that arise from speciation.
Choose one:
Part 2 SB6c: Learning Target: What role does genetics play in evolution?

- Explain in written words, pictures, or video how new species have emerged (Speciation), making sure to show how the changing environment plays a part in this.
- You are Charles Darwin and the HMS Beagle just docked at the Galapagos Islands. Write down your observations that led you to the belief in evolution by natural selection. What are the pieces of evidence that show evolution exists? Write your observations in diary form.
